Prue Leith attended Chipping Norton Health Centre in Oxfordshire today as one of the first local people to get a COVID-19 vaccination.

Prue is in the group of people aged 80 and over who have been invited to local vaccination centres in Chipping Norton, Abingdon and Henley-on-Thames this week. These areas have been selected to be part of the first wave of 280 GP practices across the country to start vaccinations as they have a higher proportion of people aged over 80 than other areas of Oxfordshire.

Prue, who safely queued with other local people outside the practice before the session began, said: "I could not be more pleased to be here. It's great that Chipping Norton is so quick off the mark. I understand it is among the first areas in the country to start vaccinations.

"The staff here have worked really hard to make this as easy as possible for us patients and my jab was painless. I really didn't feel a thing. And I've already got my appointment for the second injection in 21 days."

The vaccination programme will gather pace over the coming weeks and months across the county and country. People will be contacted when the vaccine is available for them and appointments will be arranged.

Meanwhile, the NHS is asking people to help by:

· refraining from contacting the NHS to seek a vaccine; we will contact you

· attending your appointments (when we contact you)

· continuing to follow all guidance to control the virus and save lives, including hands, face, space messages

Dr Kiren Collison, GP and clinical chair of Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said "We are delighted that practices in Chipping Norton, Abingdon and Henley are now part of the first wave of local vaccination sites that will start vaccinating people who are most vulnerable.

"I would encourage patients to get the vaccine when called for it; the strict approval process this vaccine has gone through means it is safe and our best defence against the virus.

"This is the latest step in the plans to roll out the vaccine across the country; other age groups and cohorts will be offered the vaccination in a phased approach, in line with national priorities. In addition to this, we can continue to keep ourselves and others safe by socially distancing, wearing a face covering and following the hand hygiene guidance.”
