flu jab

Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group is reminding anyone over the age of 65 to protect themselves against flu this winter with a free vaccination.  This is because people in this age group are more likely to become seriously ill and develop complications like pneumonia.  The flu vaccine will help provide protection during the autumn and winter months when older people are more vulnerable to flu.

Dr Edward Capo-Bianco, Clinical Locality Director at Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group said:  “The flu virus strikes in winter and it can be more serious than you think.  This is why the flu jab is free if you are aged 65 or over, or if you have a long-term condition.

Dr Capo-Bianco continues:  “Flu is a really unpleasant illness, particularly for those over 65.  You are more likely to become seriously ill and have complications like pneumonia or make an existing condition worse if you catch it.  This may result in an unwanted hospital stay and can even be fatal.

"If you are in any of the at-risk groups, my advice is to visit your GP or Practice Nurse and get the free NHS flu vaccination as soon as possible.   Flu vaccines are also available at your local pharmacy.   It is quick and easy to have and is the best form of protection for you and others."
