UPDATE: 2 MARCH - THIS IS EVENT IS CANCELLED DUE TO THE SEVERE WEATHER AND A NEW DATE FOR THE TALK WILL BE ANNOUNCED.

The over-use of antibiotics will come under the spotlight in a free public talk in Witney on March 3, organised by Public and Patient Partnership for West Oxfordshire.

Professor Carl Heneghan, of the University of Oxford, will be looking at a range of issues surrounding antibiotics, including:

  • What are they?
  • Why don’t they always work?
  • Why do doctors sometimes refuse to prescribe them?

Professor Heneghan is a Professor of Evidence-Based, and is skilled in putting medicine into plain English. In this presentation, he will show why antibiotics are not always the answer to our problems, where they came from, and what the future holds for them.

The talk will demonstrate how bacteria can adapt and find ways to survive the effects of an antibiotic and how this is already proving to be a major threat to patient safety.

Organised with the support of Healthwatch Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, the event will take place at The Corn Exchange, Market Place, Witney, on Saturday March 3 from 10.30am to noon. Entry is free and refreshments will be available.
