Doctor prepares COVID vaccine

The latest Oxfordshire primary care networks (PCNs) to be added to the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out - Eynsham and Witney PCN, Wallingford and South East Oxford at the Leys - have received their deliveries of the vaccine today (21 December) and will begin giving injections to patients immediately.

Highest priority patients have been invited to book in for the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccine. Those invited are patients aged 80 and over, in line with the recommendation from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation. Everyone will need two doses of the vaccine to get the best protection from the virus. Each dose must be at least 21 days apart.

Seven GP-led Primary Care Networks (PCNs) were offering COVID-19 vaccinations to people aged 80 and over in Oxfordshire by the end of last weekend (20 December 2020). These PCNs are: Abingdon, Chipping Norton, Henley-on-Thames, Banbury and three in Oxford City (Oxford Central, East Oxford, and OX3, which covers Barton and Headington).

More GP-led PCNs in Oxfordshire will be joining the vaccination programme after Christmas and into the New Year and more details will be provided as soon as they are available.  Patients are asked to wait until they are contacted by their GP practice – they should not call the NHS or their GP practice about COVID-19 vaccination appointments.

Dr Kiren Collison, GP and Clinical Chair of Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: "It is exciting to be part of this programme and to start seeing our most vulnerable patients begin to get the protection they need from COVID-19.

"The vaccination programme is very complex and we are working hard to ensure our most vulnerable patients are protected as quickly as possible. Other age groups and cohorts will be offered the vaccination in a phased way, in line with national priorities, but we need to expect this is going to take time.

"Meanwhile, we can all do our bit by continuing to keep ourselves and others safe by socially distancing, wearing a face covering and following the hand hygiene guidance."
