Help us plan GP services in West Oxon

Date: 03 November 2017

Workshop

Oxfordshire CCG held the first of two workshops this week with people in West Oxfordshire to start the process of talking to local people about what is important to them in planning GP services and primary care services in West Oxfordshire.

The workshop in Witney (1 November) follows a number of meetings that the CCG has held with patients of Deer Park Surgery, local councillors, Healthwatch and West Oxfordshire District Council.

These workshops are really important, as we are at the planning stage of ensuring that GP services are sustainable for the future. It is by talking to people that we get a better understanding of what is important to them.

This week, over 70 people sat down and talked with local GPs and NHS staff in Witney about what was important to them. Amongst a range of things, we were told that people wanted shorter waiting times, training on the online prescription service, improved customer service training for receptionists, and a clear understanding of what constitutes an urgent appointment. Suggestions on initiatives for improvement included better mental health support for young people, better links with the community and voluntary sector, better patient education on when it is appropriate to see a GP.

All of this information is being explored and we are holding a further event on Wednesday 8 November at St John the Evangelist School Hall, Bluebell Way, Carterton OX18 1JF, for more people to come and have their say.

As our plans for primary care and GP services in West Oxfordshire develop, your views and comments will be reflected in our plans which will be published on our website in December for further comment from the public.

We hope the local community will take this opportunity to engage with us on the future of primary care and GP services in West Oxfordshire.

Julie Dandridge, Head of Primary Care, Oxfordshire CCG, said ‘We would like to invite local residents to come and join us at this workshop to discuss in detail with doctors and NHS managers how GP and primary care services in their local area could be organised. We want to know from people, what works well at their GP practice at the moment. GP services are facing increased demand, recruitment difficulties and budget pressures, so we would like to understand from the public, how services could develop for the future’.

The event in Carterton will follow the same format as that held in Witney this week and will include a short presentation followed by round table discussions. Further information about this event is available online and if you are unable to attend but would like to have your say there is a short online survey available here: https://consult.oxfordshireccg.nhs.uk/consult.ti/system/home
